For more than three decades, Leeana McNeilley devoted her career to ensuring seniors in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties could remain safely and happily in their homes. From July 1989 through December 2022, Leeana served as the Director of Home Care Services at Help Unlimited, a locally owned agency founded in 1975 and widely recognized for its consistent, compassionate caregiving.
During her tenure, Leeana became not only a trusted leader in her community but also a mentor and thought leader in the evolving world of senior care.
A Front Row Seat to an Industry’s Evolution
When Leeana entered the field in the late 1980s, the industry looked very different. The concept of non-medical home care was still in its infancy, and the idea of professional caregivers providing daily living support was just starting to gain momentum. Local social workers began to transition into Care Managers and Care Coordinators, building the foundation of what we now think of as the care navigation profession.
Over the years, Leeanna witnessed the dramatic shifts in how society approached aging:
- Pre-COVID Staffing Shortages: Even before the pandemic, agencies faced a shrinking pool of caregivers, making it harder to meet growing demand.
- Industry Fragmentation: The market saw an influx of mom-and-pop companies, franchised agencies, and eventually a wave of mergers and acquisitions that ushered in large corporate players.
- Regulatory Changes: Shifting laws placed new burdens on providers, sometimes creating more barriers for families to access affordable care.
Through it all, Leeanna remained steadfast—committed to quality staff, consistent service, and the “extra loving touch” that Help Unlimited was known for.
The Burnout and the Hope
After more than 33 years of service, Leeana admits that retirement brought a much-needed pause. The years of juggling staff shortages, compliance challenges, and family expectations left her a little burned out. Yet, even in retirement, her passion for helping families navigate the complexities of senior care remains.
She believes strongly that technology and strong leadership can open the door to new models of care navigation. While many affordable options have disappeared and costs have escalated, the fundamental need remains the same: families want clarity, options, and a trusted guide.
Why Transparency Matters
Reflecting on the future, Leeana points to emerging platforms like Next Best Home as a beacon of hope. By offering transparency in local resources, curated information, and financial guidance, families can finally make informed decisions without feeling lost in the system. Leeana believes that Next Best Home and similar platforms can help families navigate the increasingly complex challenge of finding the best possible solution to their and their family’s care needs.
For Leeana, it’s not just about services—it’s about restoring faith in a care system that has become too complex and fragmented. With the right tools, families can regain confidence, and seniors can receive the dignified support they deserve.
A Lasting Legacy
Leeana McNeilley’s 33-year career at Help Unlimited is more than a line on a résumé. It’s a testament to resilience, mentorship, and dedication to seniors and their families. Her voice reminds us that while the industry has changed dramatically, the heart of caregiving—compassion, consistency, and trust—will always matter most.
And as new solutions emerge, Leeana’s legacy continues: shaping the next generation of care navigation with wisdom earned from a lifetime of service.
