What the monthly rate includes, and what it does not
Usually included
- Room and board, private or shared
- Three meals a day and snacks
- Staff on site around the clock
- Help with bathing, dressing and grooming at the base care level
- Medication reminders and housekeeping
- Activities and local transportation
Usually charged extra
- Care level increases as needs grow
- Incontinence care and one to one support
- A second occupant in the unit
- A one time community or move in fee
- Physical therapy, podiatry and pharmacy
- Respite stays, which run by the day
Ask for the base rate and the care level tiers in writing. The two numbers together are the real monthly cost, and the gap between them is where budgets break.
Memory care costs more, and here is why
Memory care runs about $9,000 a month locally, roughly 29 percent above the assisted living median. The extra pays for a secured building, a higher staffing ratio and dementia specific programming, not for a larger room.
Families often arrive here after a hospitalization, when a decision has to be made in a week. Touring two memory care communities before that moment is the single most useful thing you can do early.
How families pay for it
Income and savings
Most families start here. Social Security, pensions and investment income rarely cover the full rate on their own once care begins.
Long term care insurance
Older policies often include an assisted living benefit. Check the daily maximum, the elimination period and whether home care is covered.
Home equity
A sale, a rental, or a reverse mortgage can turn the house into monthly cash. Each has a different cost, and one of them usually keeps the house in the family.
Veterans benefits
VA Aid and Attendance adds a monthly payment for eligible veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities.
Life insurance conversion
An unneeded policy can be converted into a long term care benefit instead of being surrendered for less than it is worth.
California's Assisted Living Waiver
Medi-Cal's ALW pays for care in participating communities in selected counties, so confirm whether your county and the community accept it.
Questions families ask first
How much does assisted living cost in Santa Barbara?
The median is $7,000 a month. Across the 48 communities we surveyed in September 2026, monthly rates ran from $2,000 to $11,750, and the average was $7,139. The spread follows care level, room size and what each community includes.
What does the monthly rate include?
Rent for a private or shared unit, three meals a day, staffing around the clock, help with bathing, dressing and medication reminders at the base care level, housekeeping, transportation and activities. Higher care tiers, incontinence care, a second occupant in the room and a one time community fee are usually charged on top.
Is memory care more expensive than assisted living?
Yes. Memory care runs about $9,000 a month locally, roughly $2,000 more than the assisted living median. Secure buildings, staffing ratios and dementia programming account for the difference.
Is home care cheaper than assisted living?
Not at full time. Home care averages $45 an hour here, which comes to about $8,574 a month at 44 hours a week, above the assisted living median. It is the cheaper route when you need a handful of hours rather than daily coverage.
Does Medicare pay for assisted living?
No. Medicare covers short term skilled care and medical treatment, not room and board in an assisted living community. Long term care insurance, VA Aid and Attendance for eligible veterans, life insurance conversions, home equity, and California's Assisted Living Waiver, which operates in selected counties, are the usual funding routes.
Do we have to sell the house to pay for care?
Not by default. Selling is one of several ways to fund care and often the most expensive first move, because the house is usually the last large asset a family controls. Renting it out, using equity, or a deferred payment loan can buy the time to decide properly.
