One city, two completely different kinds of care
Thirty three licensed communities sit inside the city, and they are not variations on the same thing. A handful are large campuses with dining rooms, theatres and therapy gyms. Many are six bed residential care homes in a converted house on a residential street, where the same two caregivers know every resident by name.
The price gap between those two models is real, and it does not track quality the way families expect. A small home can cost more per month than a large community because the staffing ratio is higher and there are no economies of scale.
Tour one of each before you decide anything. The difference is obvious within ten minutes of walking in, and no list or brochure conveys it.
What drives the rate here
Land and labor set the floor. The rate a community quotes is the base care level, and the tiers above it are where budgets break: medication management, two person transfers, incontinence care and one to one support each add to the monthly number.
Entry or community fees are separate again, and they range from nothing to a full month of care. Ask for the base rate, the care tiers, and the entry fee together in writing before you compare two communities.
Where families get stuck
Most calls come in after a hospital discharge, when a room is needed in days rather than months. That is the worst moment to negotiate and the easiest moment to overpay.
The second stuck point is the house. Families own a home worth more than the care will ever cost, but the money is locked in brick, and nobody wants to be the one who sells it. There are ways to get cash out without selling, and they are worth understanding before the first bill arrives.

Santa Barbara questions families ask first
What does assisted living cost in Santa Barbara?
The median starting rate among the 33 communities in our survey is $7,500 a month, with a range from $4,000 to $11,000. The base rate excludes care level increases and any entry fee.
Are there communities with openings right now?
Fifteen of the surveyed communities reported an opening at last count. Openings change weekly, so check the vacancy directory or call before you tour.
Can I pay for care with home equity?
Often, yes. A sale, a rental, a reverse mortgage or a bridge loan each turn the house into monthly cash, and each has a different cost. The right one depends on whether you want to keep the house in the family.

Other areas we serve
Our advisor network works with families anywhere in the United States. The survey, the vacancy directory and the local numbers on this page cover the local Santa Barbara market.
Community counts and starting rates come from our own local Santa Barbara assisted living survey, updated monthly from each community's own listing. Rates are starting rates and exclude care level increases and entry fees, so treat them as a baseline rather than a quote.
