In the ever-evolving world of health and nutrition, exogenous ketones have gained significant attention for their potential benefits. To shed light on this fascinating topic, we spoke with Frank Llosa, the CEO and Founder of KetoneAid Inc., a leading company in the field. Frank’s insights into ketone esters, their applications, and their impact on health provide a compelling look into why these drinks are becoming increasingly popular.
Q: Can you start by explaining what makes ketone esters so unique compared to other forms of ketones, like MCT oil or ketone salts?
Frank Llosa: Ketone esters, specifically our product, the KetoneAid Ketone MonoEster, are unique due to their chemical structure and potency. Our Ketone ester is a bond of D-Beta Hydroxybutyrate with R 1,3 Butanediol. This ester is the primary molecule used in about 95% of exogenous ketone clinical trials and is favored by 9 out of 10 Tour de France teams. The key advantage of ketone esters is their ability to provide a more immediate and potent increase in blood ketone levels compared to MCT oil, ketone salts, or other non-Mono ketone esters without gastrointestinal issue. This means they deliver faster and more pronounced effects, making them a preferred choice for those looking for optimal performance and cognitive benefits.
Q: You mentioned that ketone esters are used by many elite athletes. Can you elaborate on how they benefit athletes, especially in high-intensity sports like cycling?
Frank Llosa: Absolutely. For athletes, especially in endurance sports like cycling, ketone esters offer several benefits. They provide a quick and sustained energy source, which is crucial for performance during long races or training sessions. Unlike glucose, which can lead to fluctuations in energy levels, ketones offer a steady fuel supply. This helps in reducing fatigue and improving overall endurance. Moreover, the rapid increase in ketone levels can enhance mental clarity and focus, which is vital for athletes who need to stay sharp throughout their performance.
Q: There’s growing interest in ketones for cognitive health. Can you explain how ketone esters might support brain function and potentially address conditions like age related brain fog?
Frank Llosa: Ketone esters have shown promising potential in supporting brain health, particularly in conditions where glucose utilization is impaired. Age related brain fog involves a reduced ability of the brain to use glucose effectively. Basically the brain is being under fueled. Ketones provide an alternative fuel source that bypasses the glucose pathway, allowing the brain to continue functioning optimally. Users have reported noticeable improvements in cognitive function within an hour of first taking it, with more benefits over a few days and with more significant changes over weeks. This makes ketone esters a compelling option for those looking to support brain health and cognitive function.
Q: For those considering ketone esters, how can they integrate them into their daily routine? Are there any specific recommendations for use?
Frank Llosa: Integrating ketone esters into your routine can be quite straightforward. They can be taken before physical activities to enhance performance or consumed daily as part of a cognitive health regimen. The key is to start with the recommended dosage and adjust based on your individual response and goals. Some users might take them before workouts for an energy boost, while others might incorporate them into their daily routine for ongoing cognitive support, but the key is to take them on empty stomach.
Q: We’ve heard that you can pay for ketone esters using an HSA. Can you explain how this works and why it might be beneficial for potential users?
Frank Llosa: Yes, ketone esters can be purchased using a Health Savings Account (HSA), which is a great benefit for users. An HSA allows individuals to use pre-tax dollars for qualifying health expenses, which can include drinks like ketone esters. This can make the investment in high-quality supplements more affordable and accessible. It’s a great way for people to manage their health expenses effectively while benefiting from the advantages of ketone esters.
Q: Finally, what’s next for KetoneAid Inc.? Are there any exciting developments or products on the horizon?
Frank Llosa: We’re constantly exploring new ways to advance the science and application of ketone esters. Our team is working on expanding our product line to offer even more options for users, including potential new formulations and innovations in delivery methods. We’re also focused on continuing our research and collaborations to better understand the full range of benefits that ketone esters can offer through dozens of human clinical trials.
Q. What other tips do you have to reduce brain fog?
Frank Llosa: I like to say that half the issue is sugar and the other half of the solution is taking ketones.
So sugar and carb reduction can make a huge difference. I’m not talking about doing completely keto diet but a low glycemic index diet. In other words cutting out the top 5 culprits which are
1) Fruit
2) Bread
3) Rice
4) Pasta
5) Fruit
Note that I mention fruit TWICE, because many are willing to do everything but fruit, but that glass of OJ may be the worst thing you can do for your aging brain.
And there are low carb bread and pasta options and riced cauliflower instead of rice. And add coconut oil or olive oil to these meals so the % of carbs is reduced and your blood sugar doesn’t jump as much.
Q. How important is maintaining a steady blood sugar?
Frank Llosa: That is super important. So much so that I highly recommend people get a $80 continuous glucose monitor such as from Abbott or Dexcom. This lets you see in near real-time whether that apple or “low carb bread” rockets your blood sugar or not. I think of a rocketing blood sugar spike as a nuclear bomb heading straight to your brain. Limit the spikes and you are halfway there. And the good news is the benefits can be immediate. This isn’t something you need to try for 30 days. One person with brain fog asked for some advice. I asked what she ate for breakfast. She answered “A bowl of fruit”. I said “Great” and followed with “Because that is the worst thing you can eat for an aging brain so cut that out and see how your brain fog is”. She then asked “when can I eat fruit again for breakfast” to which I replied “Whenever you want the brain fog to return.”Stay tuned for some exciting updates in the near future!
Thank you, Frank, for sharing your valuable insights into the world of ketone esters. It’s clear that KetoneAid Inc. is at the forefront of this innovative field, offering products that have the potential to significantly impact both athletic performance and cognitive health.
